Klackie-de-klack...

After spending more than two hours under the car saturday evening, trying to mount the gear box mount (without luck- still needs the fourth bolt!), I gave up, and went down to the drive shaft, to mount the four bolts conecting it to the gearbox- only to find, the two flanges didn't fit together. I have another drive shaft, which I put in the car- so I guess, I discovered this earlier, I just can't remenber it. Anyway, that ruined my plan of getting a testdrive in the weekend, so I quit and went home for the night.
Yesterday I started mounting the starter, the exhaust and conecting all the wires to the engine- and then the sun came out!

Got the engine running yesterday afternoon around four o'clock:

But it makes a klackideklack-sound, it's not supposed to, and I fear, it's a main or conecting rod bearing. So I started out adjusting the valves without result. Next thing is to mount a radiator, so it can get warm and have full oil pressure, before I gas it up- maybe that'll help. If not, next weekend I'll properbly throw the old engine back in- it uses a little oil and waterpump is leaking, but bearings are ok... as I recall! But time will tell.

The eagle... sorry, engine has landed!

Pictures from earlier today:

And just now, with a lot of help from the landlords, I landed the engine in Hippo!
Now I need conecting all the stuff to it, and I hope to start her up tomorrow, if not before.

Scintilla magnetos and B20/M41

I was asked about the serial numbers, the Scintilla magneto, I'm running on Ole-Henry's AA engine, has. So when I went to the garage tonight, I took a picture of it- and in case, you can't read it, I read it as:
OAP4R 601 Z 33 -->
400-0* 1340-8* / 1350

The older (and defect) mag has a slightly different advance curve and stamping, see pictures below:

And now, back to Hippo's driveline!

I had to change the clutchbearing, so yesterday I took the gearbox off, in order to get in the bell housing, and tonight it was time to reassemble it.
After reassembly, I wiped the transmission top cover with a rag, but the oily gravel was pretty stuck. So I tried a trick, I've read about in Machine Design- use WD40 as a cleaning agent. When I had read the article, I thought to my self, that it must have been a commercial article, maybe even propaganda from the company behind WD40. But with the WD40 can within my reach, I gave it a go. Much to my supprise, it actually seemed to do the job- and rather well, I might add. But see for your self (note the difference on upper and lower half of trans case):

With the driveline pretty much ready to install, and still three quaters left of working time, I started gatering parts for the other things, that need attension before inspection- among others, the lower bracket for the front shock absorbers. Needed the leftover of the old shock out, so I ended the day with a little violence and snaped the piece in two.

I then hammered the bracket back into shape, as the vice had bended it a little.

I considering, if I should clean it in citric acid, to get the rust off, but if I do, I'll blog about it later.

Tools

It's been a while, since I had an opportunity to work on a lathe, so before mounting the clutch, I turned a centering tool. It was great being back, and I must admit, I do miss it. The tool turned out fine, see pictures below.

I'll try to post the drawing at the homepage, and if unsuccesfull, you are welcome to contact me by email, and I will see, if I can send it to you.
Alot of people just cut the shaft off of an old gearbox, but as I had a chance to brush up on old skills, and make it in stainless steel, I did- this way I also have a custom tool, which is always kuul.

Next steps for Hippo is mounting of the new clutch bearing, gearbox mounted to engine again and into the enginebay.

Enigne start-up on the floor

So, I started up the engine for Hippo, a properbly stock B20 with no aparent history in my possesion- so I hope, it will work for awhile, until she's inspected, and I have had the time to renovate the old engine, which she came with.
Start of B20 for Hippo

(Due to some problems with the phone company's data coverage,
I wasn't able to upload the video via my blogger app. After nearly two weeks, I ended up downloading a youtube upload-app, so please click on the link to see it.)

One gone...

Sold an Amazon yesterday, my '63 four door. Kept the front and overdrive gear box though.

So now I have space to get Ole-Henry indoor, as Hippo is taking up the warm garage and an auto lift is in her old place.
Next thing is to get her back on the road again. I was aming for christmas, but that might be naive, so anytime this winter is fine.

Braces for a sun visor

Was at House of Kustomz (Brians part of the former Pirate Kusomz, after what feels like a bad divorce) to help prepare for the show at Bella Center the comming weekend. Tonights task was to fabricate a pair of braces for the sun visor on the newly build '28 Chevé pick-up (a cut-down two door sedan), as the old casted ones was broken.
I hammered a piece of steel pipe flat, bended it, and made it fit.

The visor end was threaded to match the old brass bolts, and the A-pillar end was rivited to the pillar.
(Guy in the back ground is Matt, HoK's new man.)

A kuul detail on a rather rough car.

Last week I was out at Tim's new garage, where he is working on the chopped '53 Pontiac for a customer down south.
I especially like the modified molding on the B post:

I will not be going to either shops as often as in the old days- not because, I like one part better than the other, but because neither of the guys behind the shops have been up to my garage, helping me with my projects. So, one hour spend on helping them, is an hour less for working on my own cars.

Happy birthday to me...

Hasn't blogged i a while.
Ole-Henry has been running great, a little alternator problems, but so far I've managed to fix it by charging the battery at home, and trying to drive home before it's dark.
I began to work on the fourdoor Volvo 121, but I had to give up. Realisticly I'd be better off finding another for the same price as the body work alone. So I had the sheet metal guy and mechanic, Børge Henschel, to look at my 221, Hippo- and we've decided to work on that instead.
Working on the Volvo's has left very little room for planing a birthday party, and my luck would have, that my birthday was the same day the two beamed auto lift, I bought, should be taken down- so no big party this year. I invited Lörs von Loco and Shaddy Shane back to my place after the work, and had some good lunch, and otherwise I celebrated by relaxing with Rikke. Here are some pictures from the day, and the days after.

Gifts from myself to me:

Spend the day in good company:

And birthday meal should be massive! I made large "wienerschnitzlen" with pan fried potatos and butter sauce (guess it's not so healthy, but it tasted good!).

Served with a liberty ale!

And for dessert: hot chocolate and lemon half-moon with whiped cream!

When parts gets impossible to find...

... one must make them new.
I had a request for a rubber wedge for the back door of a Volvo 445, from a friends farther, who couldn't seem to find it anywhere. Luckyly there was one in useable condition on a set of rear doors, I had, so he picked both doors up yesterday.

It is held by two screws, has a steel backing plate and two dustance pipes inside.

But before he did, I spend an evening drawing a 3D model of it, for future reference.

The drawing will be placed on my website soon.
